FoWY Funds Wide Range of Programs During 2016/17 School Year


In this 2016/17 academic year, the FoWY Annual Fund has provided essential resources that help ensure a high quality educational experience for all 2200 Whitney Young students. We have provided over $50,000 so far this year in funding to these programs based on their requests to us.

Below is the complete list of school clubs, organizations, teams and classroom projects that were funded through this year’s grant funding process.

In spite of our best efforts, there were many programs that were only partially funded. Your support will enrich the lives of every Whitney Young student.

Chess Team Provided for the Chess Team to train with a chess master. Clubs and Organizations
Girls Volleyball Provided for a new net system which includes two poles, a net, antennas, referee stand, and pole pads, a serving machine, and volleyballs. Athletics
Whitney Young Girls Cross Country Provided for the purchase of new warm-ups. Athletics
Diverse Learners Department Provided Ventra Cards as part of Community Based Instructions which includes using public transportation. Classroom Projects
Special Olympics Sports Teams Provided game uniforms for Special Olympics basketball and volley ball teams. Athletics
Project Blanket Provided materials to make no-sew fleece blankets for homeless shelters around Chicago. Clubs and Organizations
Band Provided high quality microphones and audio interface for classroom band recording purposes. Classroom Projects and Improvements
Girls Lacrosse Provided uniforms to meet the Illinois Women’s Lacrosse regulations. Athletics
Pom Squad Provided for leotards, music copyright and DJs for competition. Athletics
Art and School Beautification Club (aka: Art Club) Provided ink for the HP DesignJet Printer that can be used to produce posters, etc for the school Clubs and Organizations
Model United Nations Provided for the Model United Nations team to attend an overnight conference at Northwestern University (in addition to a self-funded conference at Notre Dame or in the DC area). Clubs and Organizations
Business Professionals of America Provided for attendance at regional, state, and national competitions. Clubs and Organizations
Whitney Young Softball Provided equipment to increase safe play of the game. Athletics
Eco Club Provided basic supplies – timers, water pups, misting systems, and vinyl – for maintaining the animals of WY. Clubs and Organizations
Eco Club and Maker Spacer Provided for the purchase of a Carvey to be housed in the Maker Space. Clubs and Organizations
Art Club/Honors Drawing/AP Studio Drawing Provided iPads for the integration of art making technology into AP and Honors Drawing and Painting curriculum Classroom Projects and Improvements
Swim Team Provided 2 touch pads to upgrade outdated equipment. Athletics
Technology Provided equipment for The Maker Lab which is a cross-curricular initiative by the Science and Art Departments. Classroom Projects and Improvements
Boys and Girls Soccer Provided the boys and girls soccer programs with new goals that meet current standards. Athletics
Graphic Design, AP Photography, Film & Video Provided for the purchase 5 DSLR cameras for use in the digital art classes & extracurricular. Classroom Projects and Improvements
Whitney Young Ted-Ed Club Provided for a light up logo for school-wide speaking event. Clubs and Organizations
Guys and Dolls Dance Company Provided lighting, tech crew, and marley tape for WY’s Guys and Dolls Dance Company Up Close and Personal Show. Classroom Projects and Improvements
Robotics Team Provided for competition fees and equipment. Clubs and Organizations
Girl Up Provided for the purchase of the book Half the Sky. Clubs and Organizations
Chinese Language and Culture Club Provided for the purchase of Chinese games. Clubs and Organizations

Spring Dance Show
